MUMBAI, July 23: Rohit Choudhary and Mallika Parekh won the men’s and women’s title respectively with the latter completing a double in winning the girls singles too in the Bank of India-sponsored Matunga Gymkhana State Ranking Table Tennis tournament here today.

Top seed Aditya Mahagaokar won the boys singles on the final day on which only the men’s and women’s matches saw some fight.

Rohit defeated Kunal Solanki 18-21, 22-20, 23-21, 21-12 while Mallika defeated Mamta Prabhu 21-14, 21-12, 16-21, 21-16 in the women’s final.

Mallika won the girls title in a jiffy, defeating the lanky Shalmali Inamdar 21-9, 21-13, 21-19. Aditya also won in straight games, beating Swapnil Namjoshi 21-15, 21-13, 21-18.

Mallika’s greater consistency and superior options in offence helped her wrap the girls title comfortably. Shalmali kept improving with each game but was not fast enough to win anything than 19 more in the third set for a 0-3 loss.

Mallika’s this virtue was evident in the women’s singles where she easilywrapped up the first two games with Mamta showing attack in her repertoire. Surprisingly, Mallika lost the third game but not her concentration as she came back to win the fourth and complete the double.

Rohit was inconsistent in his attacks in the first game. Kunal showed a better defence in retrieving whatever was hit in his direction. But Rohit’s relentless attack from the second game paid him rich dividends. Despite being down 15-17 he persisted with his instincts to win the game on extra points. Even the third went to extra points but Kunal was always fighting against the wall.

In the fourth game, Kunal caved in and gave up the struggle.

Aditya, the top seed, won the boys title with a solid display. With Swapnil bent on attacking, Aditya’s defensive approach netted not only more points but also the match.
