Malaysia ends Pakistan8217;s reign

Shamsul Islam beat Yap Kok Four 9-4, 9-2, 9-4 but Kenneth Low gave Malaysia the title with a 9-1, 9-3, 4-9, 9-5 win over Ijaz Azmat.

In another interesting individual encounter Rebecca Chiu avenged her defeat in the individual final last week by beating Nicol David 2-9, 6-9, 10-8, 9-6, 9-1 but Tricia Chuah routed Dawn Olsen 9-2, 9-3, 9-1 and then Christina Mak won another exciting duel against Sharon Wee 1-9, 3-9, 9-7,10-8, 9-7 for Hong Kong.

INDIAN MEN FOURTH: Indian men went down tamely to Hong Kong 0-3 to be placed fourth. Ritwik Bhattacharya took a game off former Pakistani Faheem Khan working in Hong Kong for the last 12 years but the Indian lost 1-9, 4-9, 9-7, 2-9. Dhiraj Singh led 8-5 in the first game and then tapered off against Vincent Chung at 8-10, 1-9, 3-9. Indian coach Cyrus Poncha said the placing justified the team8217;s seeding.

WOMEN FIFTH: Eighteen-year-old Deepali Anwekar, a first semester student of Virar Medical College, provided the star turn as Indian women prevailed over Korea 2-1 for the fifth place. After Mekhala Subedar won the first match comfortably against Young Jim Kang in 12 minutes, Vaidehi Reddy lost to Eun Ok Park 9-6, 9-2, 5-9, 0-9, 3-9. Deepali came from behind to beat Kyung Lee 4-9, 9-6, 9-3, 9-4.
