MUMBAI, NOV 19: CHM College, Ulhasnagar entered the final of the inter-collegiate handball tournament by defeating Somaiya Arts 17-15 in a close match at Somaiya College here today. Favourites Mahatma Education Society were hands-down winners of the second semi-final, as Pendharkar, Dombivli, failed to unravel their opponent’s superior game, and went down 10-25.

Somaiya have to thank their custodian Sachin Nair for keeping them in the game with numerous brilliant saves. Apart from that, the tie hardly rose above the ordinary. Somaiya repeatedly allowed Sudhir Mirajkar of CHM openings, which he exploited in the second half. That undid the good work Karan Patel had done by tying down the dangerous southpaw Samson Silveira. In offence, Somaiya were to miss half a dozen penalties.

The lead kept changing hands in the second half, and the score was tied at 14 with four minutes play left. Sudhir scored twice with drives, while at the other end, Somaiya made three costly turnovers in their haste to draw levelthrough fast-breaks.

Despite the excitement and close finish, the game paled in comparison to the brilliant stuff displayed by Mahatma earlier. Their fakes and passes were of a high quality, as Ajay Kulkarni and Sushant Thakur combined well to bore holes in Pendharkar’s defence.

Conspicuous in their absence from the semi-final draw were Mithibai and NM Commerce. School champions Jamnabai Narsee feed these colleges with a ceaseless flow of talent, and it was surprising to see Mithibai not turn up for their match, while NM crashed out in the quarters.

Amateur Handball Association of Mumbai secretary Sandeep Joshi explained, “The students from Jamnabai play for a maximum two seasons for the college sides, and then quit. That cuts down the supply of fresh players to the Mumbai team, forcing seniors like us to continue playing.”
