Shatrughan Sinha takes a shot at Kangana Ranaut, says actors are ‘used’ by political parties: ‘Tell them India didn’t get independence in 2014’
Shatrughan Sinha shared that Dharmendra probably left politics after one term because he was upset by the system. He also addressed Sunnhy Deol leaving politics; said Hema Malini never got her due.

Like many of his contemporaries, late actor Dharmendra also tried his hand at politics after he had made a name for himself in the movies. And after serving one term as a Member of Parliament from 2004-2009, the veteran actor left politics. In a recent interview, Shatrughan Sinha, who has been active in politics since the early 2000s, shared that political parties often bring in celebrities and “use” them to win elections, but they seldom train the actors as politicians. Shatrughan then took a shot at actor Kangana Ranaut, who once said that India gained “real freedom” in 2014 after Narendra Modi became the PM of the country, and said that political parties need to train celebrities with such basics.
When asked why Dharmendra left politics after one term as an MP, he said, “I would say our people are also to be blamed for this. Those who recruited him into the party, and used him to contest elections… These people (political parties) are bringing in celebrities from films, but they don’t brief them correctly.” He added, “When you bring in celebrities, you only use them when you want to win the elections.”
Sinha first started his political career in BJP, the party which also gave a ticket to Dharmendra, but is now an MP via a ticket from Trinamool Congress. Recalling the time he started his political journey, Shatrughan said, “At least in my time, I was taught everything. LK Advani and Atal Bihari Vajpayee asked me to train under Madan Lal Khurana. Then in Bihar, I trained under Kailashpati Mishra.”
He added, “But now, when they bring people in, I don’t want to name them… I mean if you have brought in people, teach them something. Tell them when the country gained independence, at least tell them that the country did not gain independence in 2014.” Kangana, who is also an actor, and an MP from Mandi, had earlier said that the independence in 1947 was “bheekh (alms)” and the country got “real freedom” in 2014. After Shatrughan’s comment, some section of the audience applauded.
Shatrughan said that Sunny Deol also left politics after one term and shared that it is said that the Deols left politics because “they were so upset.” He then added that Hema Malini, who has been a part of BJP since 2004, has not gotten her due yet. “Hema ji is so nice, she is so senior. I honestly feel that the position that she should have had, she has not been given that position. The party, society, us and her, all of us are at fault for that,” he said.
Concluding the subject, Sinha said that Dharmendra won by a huge margin in Bikaner and it was up to the party after that to follow up with him. “They should have sat down with him, at least once a week… Anyway, you brought up Dharam ji and I had a lot going on in my heart, I got a chance to say it all,” he said.
