There is no trace of WMD and there is no trace of Saddam Hussein. Of the twin mysteries, the almost magical dematerialisation of thousands of tons and litres of chemical and biological agents is something that can be explained without having to bring in magic and occult.

Probably they were simply not there in the first place and the world in general, and the American public in particular, were deliberately deceived and cynically manipulated into endorsing an invasion that they would not have countenanced otherwise.

Another explanation could be that these ingredients for horrible weaponry are sitting right there in Iraq but have ‘‘Made in USA’’ markings still visible on most of them and therefore better remained missing. If that is the case, then the curious US disinterest in grilling the now accessible Iraqi scientists and its vehement insistence on keeping the UN inspectors out of Iraq makes perfect sense.

Saddam Hussein’s miraculous disappearance, however, has one tearing one’s hair in utter bafflement because not only was he there, but there were also supposed to have been a dozen or so of lookalikes of Saddam Hussein and his two sons who reportedly stood in for the originals during potentially hazardous public appearances. Saddam and family could well be dead and buried deep under the rubble or they might have managed to beat death by a whisker and escaped with the active connivance of France, fast emerging as the number one rogue nation inimical to US interests, but what about the tribe of body doubles? What happened to them? Why hasn’t the USA been able to lay its hands on even one of them so far?

These mass vanishing acts are taking place too often of late for comfort, first in Afghanistan not too long ago and now in Iraq. Would some media maven kindly dig deep and let us know whether there is a rational explanation for this or are we headed back in time to the dark ages of sorcery, witchcraft and (since the location is ancient Arab lands) radar-invisible magic carpets or what?
