CHANDIGARH, June 29: In celebration of renowned playwright Federico Garcia Lorca8217;s birth centenary, a local drama society, Yavnika Theatre Group, will stage three shows of a Hindi translation of Lorca8217;s play, Yerma, at Tagore Theatre beginning on July 1 at 6:45 p.m. Admission is free; patrons are requested not to bring children below the age of 12.

Actors from the National School of Drama will carry the main roles and the play is being directed by Suveeran, also from the NSD. Sewak Nayar has translated the play into Hindi.

Yerma is a woman married to an impotent man. The playwright uses her vain longing for children to lay bare the man-woman relationship, the status of women and the vulnerability of the family. Artists plan play on Kargiln SIX local drama societies will cooperate in staging a street play, Shaheed ki Wapasi. Starting from July 1, they plan to take the play to all sectors of the city to create awareness of the Kargil conflict and motivate the public to donate to the Prime Minister8217;s Relief Fund. The plan was chalked out on Monday at Punjab Kala Bhavan.

Drama societies participating in the project are: Theatre for Theatre, Sri Sai Arts, Lok Kala Manch, Indian Performing Arts, Theatre Devotees and Theatre Lab. According to a press note, the drama company will accept invitations to stage the play from societies or individuals; invitations should be routed through Rajiv Mehta, Theatre Lab secretary, Phone 732420. The play will be staged free of cost.
