Five constables who killed traffic sergeant Bapi Sen on New Year’s Eve in 2002 for protesting against their teasing a girl were today sentenced to life imprisonment and fined Rs 10,000 each. Besides, they will serve another six months in jail for eve-teasing.The convicted policemen — Mujibur Rehman, Piyush Goswami, Sreedam Bauri, Madhusudan Chakrabarthy and Shekhar Mitra — broke down, as they heard the sentence pronounced by Justice Basudev Majumder. Defence counsel Tapas Mukherjee said the convicted would move the high court against the judgment. Sen’s family expressed relief on hearing the verdict. ‘‘We are happy at the punishment meted out to the five men,’’ Sen’s elder brother, Anup Sen, told The Indian Express.
