
MUMBAI, MARCH 16: Additional Sessions Judge T Y Hiwrale today sentenced three Shiv Sena activists to life imprisonment for murdering a fellow party activist following a trade union rivalry in 1996.
The prosecution stated that Pramod Dalvi, Ravi Belsane and Pandarinath Jadhav were charged with the murder of Ramesh Shejwadkar a restaurant captain with Hotel Centaur at Santacruz airport. All were members of Bharatiya Kamgar Sena Union at the hotel.
According to the first information report FIR lodged by Shejwadkar8217;s daughter Sheetal at the D N Nagar police station, he was removed from the managing committee of the union three months before his murder took place at 11 pm on June 5, 1996. The union, whose secretary was Jaywant Parab, broke into two groups after his dismissal.
Sheetal revealed that she was inside their flat at LIG Colony at D N Nagar while she heard loud noise from outside where her parents were having a chat with the neighbours. When she stepped out, she saw her father lying in a pool ofblood. He was rushed to Cooper hospital. On way Shejwadkar told his daughter that three close associates of Parab had attacked him with choppers. Shejwadkar who admitted to the hospital with 23 stab wounds and bullet injuries died the next day.
Parab, who was in the United States when the murder took place, was not named as an accused nor was he arrested in the case.
Eyewitnesses in the case informed the police that the accused had attacked Shejwadkar with choppers and revolvers and Dalvi had fired a round in the air after firing at Shejwadkar. The trio were arrested by the D N Nagar police a few days later.
After hearing both the prosecution and the defence and examination of eyewitnesses, panch witnesses and police officers, the judge sentenced the trio to life imprisonment. Special Public Prosecutors S P Desai and U K Makasare appeared for the state while the accused were represented by Harshad Ponda, C K Talekar and Niteen Pradhan.
