Congress today demanded that Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee be summoned by the Liberhan Commission based on former UP CM Kalyan Singh8217;s statement that Vajpayee was 8216;8216;privy8217;8217; to the conspiracy for the demolition of Babri Masjid.

Spokesperson Jaipal Reddy today said: 8216;8216;Prime Minister Vajpayee should be summoned before Liberhan Commission for his deposition.8217;8217;

8216;8216;Earlier, the occasion did not arise as there was no material warranting such an issue8230;There is imperative need for the PM to appear before the Commission and reply to charges levelled against him by Kalyan Singh that he was privy to Babri Masjid demolition8217;8217;, Reddy said.

8216;8216;The Prime Minister8217;s deposition before the Commission would not downgrade the office of the Prime Minister but would enhance the value of democracy. It would also strengthen the rule of law that all the people of the country were equal before the law,8217;8217; Reddy said. At the same time, the Congress clarified it did not mean that whatever Kalyan Singh had stated about Vajpayee8217;s role in the case was valid 8216;8216;therefore, Vajpayee should be summoned for clarification8217;8217;.

Reddy admitted that Singh 8216;8216;did play a controversial role on the fateful day8217;8217; and was a co-accused in the incident as per the CBI chargesheet.
