Congress today demanded that Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee be summoned by the Liberhan Commission based on former UP CM Kalyan Singh’s statement that Vajpayee was ‘‘privy’’ to the conspiracy for the demolition of Babri Masjid.

Spokesperson Jaipal Reddy today said: ‘‘Prime Minister Vajpayee should be summoned before Liberhan Commission for his deposition.’’

‘‘Earlier, the occasion did not arise as there was no material warranting such an issue…There is imperative need for the PM to appear before the Commission and reply to charges levelled against him by Kalyan Singh that he was privy to Babri Masjid demolition’’, Reddy said.

‘‘The Prime Minister’s deposition before the Commission would not downgrade the office of the Prime Minister but would enhance the value of democracy. It would also strengthen the rule of law that all the people of the country were equal before the law,’’ Reddy said. At the same time, the Congress clarified it did not mean that whatever Kalyan Singh had stated about Vajpayee’s role in the case was valid ‘‘therefore, Vajpayee should be summoned for clarification’’.

Reddy admitted that Singh ‘‘did play a controversial role on the fateful day’’ and was a co-accused in the incident as per the CBI chargesheet.
