8226; Nobody has advocated raising the height of the SSP dam without rehabilitating the affected persons. It is human psychology to get name and fame. Aamir Khan8217;s sudden jump into the Narmada movement 8216;People can8217;t be left to die, that8217;s common sense8217;, April 23 seems to be motivated by his desire to attain the status of the Big B.

8226; The Bhakra dam was built and inaugurated with great hopes but to the best of my knowledge, Gobindsagar Reservoir never got filled to its capacity. The dam and the powerhouse are a delightful sight indeed, but the dam also has problems due to silting. Who knows, there could be similar miscalculations in case of the Narmada dam as well? Those who are insisting
that the height of the dam be increased seem to be treating human life as a cheap commodity.

8226; Why doesn8217;t the mainstream media relentlessly pursue each and every farmer suicide and Naxal attack in the same fashion as they endlessly report on wardrobe malfunctions and sibling rivalries amongst celebrity policitians 8216;A yatra in the land of hatya and atmahatya8217;, April 23? Even a small model8217;s suicide or murder is given more importance than that of farmers in rural areas.

8226; Sudheendra Kulkarni8217;s article bringing out the differences between 8216;8216;star-lit India8217;8217; and 8216;8216;neon-lit India8217;8217; was touching. I am a student of IIT-Delhi. I am a part of the 8216;8216;star-lit India8217;8217;8212;educated in the best institutes of the country and now ready to reap glittering benefits of the same. I don8217;t know whether it is possible to bridge the drift between the two Indias. I don8217;t understand much of economics, but I have read that economic liberalisation benefits slowly but surely trickle down to the lowest classes of the society. I certainly hope they do.
Kanthi
8226; History is proof that a nation ignores its farmers at its own peril. We as a nation and society are pushing our farmers to the brink of disaster, while we watch on as silent spectators. I believe that there is a very thin line between suicide and homicide.
