Upset over the terrorist attack in Hira Nagar, which killed eight persons, Minister of State for Defence Chaman Lal Gupta said the time has come to teach Pakistan a lesson. In an interview with PRADEEP DUTTA, Gupta hinted at military action against Islamabad once the elections are over. Excerpts:
Despite heavy security, terrorists have struck again.
It was known that terrorists will strike to disrupt the election process. In his August 14 speech, General Pervez Musharraf had made it clear that elections in J-K will not be allowed to go smooth. We are waiting for the elections to get over. Once the process is complete, we will initiate a strong action against Pakistan.
Is war the strong action you are hinting at?
Why not?
You talked of war against Pakistan even earlier.
We have never denied the option of war against Pakistan. India is a big country with many challenges, which has prevented us from going to war. But let the elections be over and see what action we can initiate.
The firing took place just half a km away from a polling station. Was there a security lapse?
I cannot blame the security. It is not possible to completely plug the borders. The continuing infiltration is a matter of concern. But I would like the administration to be more cautious.
Did this attack affect the polling?
The voters have proved the terrorists wrong by queuing at the polling booths. The courage shown by the people is our strength. Militancy is in its last phase.
