8226; This refers to 8216;Towards the end game8217; by Pratap Bhanu Mehta. Though the Congress is the main culprit in bungling the nuclear deal, what is most painful is that all the other active participants have also played foul. The Left had a clear agenda of sabotaging the deal: it used delaying tactics and threatened to withdraw support, thereby making the Congress and its allies appear guilty. They have indeed succeeded in their mission.

For a day

8226; The BJP8217;s call for 8220;Bharat Bandh8221; on July 3 in response to the Amarnath land transfer issue was unwarranted.

A single day off means a loss of crores to the economy. India is a country obsessed with holidays, which are used in turn for celebrations, mourning and protests.

Those using them as gimmicks should not be elected, and political parties should refrain from such 8220;bandhs8221;, as such tools only encourage conflict and hurt the economy. The law should deal sternly with protesters so that the working people do not suffer.

Change the subject

8226; This refers to your editorial 8216;Time to move on8217;.

As is its wont, the BJP is always in search of emotive religious issues to exploit for electoral gains. It has every right to confront the Centre on the latter8217;s economics and politics, but it must desist from taking recourse to shortcuts to serve vested interests, which lead to disharmony and instability. To prove itself as a responsible national party, it should shun parish-pump politics and place national interests over its partisan ends.

Desolation row

8226; This refers to Jaithirth Rao8217;s article on India8217;s foreign policy . No matter how much our country tries to call itself an emerging superpower, the stark reality is that we have not had a defined foreign policy since Indira Gandhi. The main reason for this is coalition politics that hamper any sound foreign policy decisions.

Recently, at my university in the US, no student wanted to represent India at a Model United Nations Conference because they did not want to represent a 8220;boring8221; country without a coherent foreign policy. India should take some tips from its neighbour, Pakistan, which has a clear foreign policy in spite of domestic problems.
