This was one occasion when one Left hand did not know what another Left hand was doing and it caused a fair bit of embarrassment for them. While CPIM General Secretary Prakash Karat was adamant in Delhi that the Union Government could fall if it persisted with the nuclear deal, Sitaram Yechury was in Gujarat talking of how a coalition of secular parties could defeat communal forces. Yechury was stumped because North Bhavnagar constituency is an example of such a secular unity, where the Congress had declined to field a candidate and left it to the CPIM to take on the BJP.
