NEW DELHI, July 10: The Left parties have appealed to President K R Narayanan to intervene and put a stop to the illegal construction work going on near the disputed site in Ayodhya.

A delegation of MPs belonging to the CPI(M), CPI, Forward Bloc and RSP, who have just returned from Ayodhya, met Narayanan on Thursday evening to apprise him of the hectic construction activity being carried out at a distance of one and a half kilometres from the site.

According to Gurudas Dasgupta of the CPI, the President gave the MPs a “patient hearing” and said he would look into it.

The MPs in their memorandum to the President highlighted two issues. Firstly, that parts of the proposed Ram temple were being built at a hectic pace at a workshop close to the disputed site. Secondly, the recent statements of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and the RSS that the temple would be built only at the disputed site.

These developments were a matter of grave concern and are “too dangerous to be overlooked by the country and thegovernment”, the MPs said.
