There is the nuclear deal—now there is also going to be a fallout. The agreement with the US has increased the gulf between the Left and the Congress, with the Congress leadership deciding to stand firm amid the growing bitterness on either side. The fallguys in this are likely to be Congressmen who had warmed up to the Left, hoping to win the Communists’ support for gaining entry into Rashtrapati Bhavan. And so what started as a quiet exercise to locate such leaders is now gathering momentum that may culminate in a Cabinet reshuffle after the Winter Session of Parliament. The word is out that a handful of old Congress hands, like Arjun Singh, are on the watchlist. Other names doing the rounds include those of S Jaipal Reddy and Saifuddin Soz.
