Lecture on Pokhran blast

VADODARA, May 16: Associate Director Engineering of the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research Ravindra Kale said that India8217;s second nuclear tests took the world by surprise because the satellites were not powerful enough to track the preparations which were generally done at night. He was speaking on Pokhran-II in a lecture at the Faculty of Engineering and Technology on Saturday.He added that there were misconceptions that the nuclear tests had led to a lot of environmental hazards. 8220;The tests do generate a lot of heat, but that heat does not affect the habitat around,8221; said Kale. He added that the people also feared that nuclear tests meant preparations for war, but it was high time that such misconceptions be cleared from the minds of the people.

According to Kale, 8220;The nuclear tests, on the contrary, had been helpful for radioactives and agricultural purposes.8221;
