April 20: The process of learning cannot be limited to schools, colleges or universities and must be made available to all, said Werner Maugh of UNESCO8217;s Institute of Education while delivering his keynote address at the international seminar on Global Trends in Adult Learning8217; in the city today.

The seminar, hosted by the Department of Adult and Continuing Education, was held at the University of Mumbai8217;s Convocation Hall. It was inaugurated by Vice-Chancellor Dr Snehalata Deshmukh.

Maugh said this meet was a run-up to the UNESCO8217;s world Conference on Higher Education, to be held in Paris in October this year. He said all educational institutions should become life-long learning institutions so that people can continue to educate themselves throughout their lives. Director of Adult and Continuing Education, Dr Renuka Narang, said 15 international scholars from Africa, Australia, Carribean, China, Arab States, Japan, Canada, Italy, India, Germany, USA and UK will share and exchange and exchangeinformation with over 20 Indian adult education scholars. 8220;After this preparatory meeting, the international delegates will undertake an excursion to Gujarat Vidyapeeth, Ahmedabad, established by Mahatma Gandhi,8221; said Dr Narang. Another goal of this preparatory meeting was the development of a plan of action for the working group as a follow-up to UNESCO8217;s Fifth International Conference that was held in July, 1997.

The VC said higher education should now cater to the needs of a community at large, leading to the evolution of community colleges.
