While it’s difficult to break into show business, it’s harder to survive there. Even those who manage to ride a wave of success for a long time may eventually fall and even be phased out, and that’s the industry’s unpredictable nature. At the same time, there also are some who voluntarily give up their perches and silently exit the industry, no longer blinded by its glitz and glam, deciding to script their lives differently. Renuka Menon was one among them. Renuka who? Well, even if her real name doesn’t ring a bell, only one face would come to mind for those familiar with Malayalam cinema of the 2000s upon hearing the word “Rakshasi” (demoness); that’s the impact she had on the masses with her debut movie.

Although the overall quality of Malayalam films was deplorable in the early 2000s, this era saw the arrival and rise of several young actors, including Prithviraj and Indrajith Sukumaran, Bhavana, Meera Jasmine, Navya Nair, and Jayasurya. Kunchacko Boban had by then become a young star and a heartthrob among the masses. This was also the period when filmmakers slowly began to tell stories of the younger generation. Notable among such directors was Kamal, who had just made waves with the Kunchacko Boban-Shalini starrer Niram (1999), revolving around two college-going childhood best friends. Although his next two Malayalam movies were hard-hitting dramas, Kamal returned to the college setting in 2002.

Who is Renuka Menon?

However, he did not go for established young actors this time. While the movie, Nammal, featured veteran actors like Suhasini Maniratnam, Balachandra Menon, and Innocent in key roles, the lead characters were played by debutants Jishnu Raghavan, Sidharth Bharathan, Renuka Menon, and Bhavana. Although it was in an unreleased movie titled Mayamohithachandran that Renuka reportedly worked first, since it never saw the light of day, Nammal became her debut film.

Released during the Christmas season, the romantic comedy-drama became one of the biggest hits of the year, and the song “Rakshasi,” wherein Jishnu and Sidharth’s characters ‘humorously’ refer to Renuka’s character as a demoness, became a trendsetter. Since the Kerala society was yet to achieve political awakening and understand that the song featured outright harassment, “Rakshasi” did not receive as much backlash as it should have or would have if debuted today. And the blockbuster success of the film and the song earned Renuka widespread recognition, and she was soon cast opposite up-and-coming young star Prithviraj as the female lead in Meerayude Dukhavum Muthuvinte Swapnavum (2003).

The very next year, she made her Telugu debut with Anandamanandamaye, and in 2005, she entered the Tamil and Kannada film industries with the Bharath-starrer February 14 and the Upendra-starrer News, respectively, thus making her mark in all four South Indian film industries within three years. She also shared the screen with Ravi Mohan in Daas (2005). In 2006, she appeared in three movies. While she played the heroine opposite Prithviraj again in Vargam, Renuka appeared alongside Arya in the Tamil film Kalabha Kadhalan, and also had a key role in the Suresh Gopi-led Pathaaka. However, in 2006, after being an actor for just four years, Renuka bid adieu to the industry.
