
MUMBAI, Jan 30: For the first time in the history of Maharashtra government, a person who has been tried for murder will be the Chief Minister. But apart from being an accused in a murder case, the new CM, Narayan Tatu Rane, has many faces as a politician.Rane, who hails from Kankavali in Sindhudurg district, was charged with murder of a Congress activist a few years before the Sena-BJP alliance government came to power.
The Congress activist was shot dead by unidentified assailants in a public function in presence of Rane. He was arrested later and was tried by the sessions court. Rane was recently acquitted from the case for lack of evidence. Rane is enjoys considerable clout in Sindhudurg.A gat-pramukh first and shakha-pramukh later, Rane began his political career as a corporator (Chembur) of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation in 1985.
With his growing clout in the Sena, he was made chairman of the BEST in 1987 and continued to hold the post for three consecutive years. This is known as a recordin the history of BEST.After the alliance assumed power, Rane was given the Dairy Development portfolio. He was given the Revenue portfolio after Sudhir Joshi met with an accident. Rane has worked as a clerk with the Income Tax department, which helped him to master the Revenue department. Rane had his schooling at Muktanand High School but his two sons are studying in the US.
Speaking to The Indian Express soon after the Sena chief announced his name as the new C M a jubilant Rane said providing a clean and result oriented government as envisaged by Thackeray would be his top priority.Besides this, he would also give priority to improving law and order situation in the metropolis in the particular and the state in general and implement the welfare schemes of the party in letter and spirit.“While entire administration will be geared up on a war footing, specific action plan will be chalked out to implement the developmental schemes of the alliance government,” Rane said.
Elaborating on his plan,Rane said a new strategy will have to be drafted the implement the much publicised scheme to provide free houses to the 40 lakh slumdwellers in the metropolis and employment opportunities to 27 lakh jobless youths. When asked if he will reshuffle top bureaucrats to strengthen the administration, Rane said certainly, he will have to take some concrete steps for this purpose.
