As Sri Lankan security forces stepped up their guard after gunmen wounded a top election official and a candidate ahead of April 2 polls, President Chandrika Kumaratunga on Sunday condemned poll-related violence. and said it was a hindrance to a free and fair election.

‘‘One cannot condone these acts of violence and these are against democracy,’’ Kumaratunga said.

Security forces sounded an alert in Batticaloa district, increasing their already tight guard following the overnight shooting of top public servant in the district Ratnam Manoguruswamy, who was still in intensive care. The victim was also the top official responsible for conducting the April 2 vote in the region.

In a separate incident, a Tamil candidate, T. Maheswaran, was shot and wounded in Colombo on Saturday as he left a temple. Maheswaran is running for PM Ranil Wickremesinghe’s United National Party.
