Seven people have been killed and 12 injured in a bus accident in Uttarakhand’s Almora on Tuesday, police said.
According to SSP Devender Pincha, the private bus carrying 19 passengers was heading to Ramnagar in Nainital from Almora’s Dwarahat when it fell into a gorge around 9 am on Tuesday, killing six people instantly. “We are ascertaining the cause of the accident and if any technical faults resulted in it,” the SSP said.
The State Disaster Response Force has been carrying out rescue operations, and officers at the spot said that of the six seriously injured, three were airlifted to AIIMS Rishikesh and three others referred to Ramnagar for further treatment. Others are undergoing treatment at a government hospital in Bhikiyasain. The deceased include four men and three women, and injuries have been sustained by 10 men and two women.
The bus fell into a gorge 200 metres below the road at a bend. “It seems like there was a technical fault as the driver could not veer it away from the bend. The bus was not overloaded with passengers. The regional transport officials have been asked to probe into the matter,” said an SDRF official.
Registered in 2019, the bus has two pending challans for traffic and parking violations in Nagina and Najibabad in Uttar Pradesh.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed sorrow over the accident and directed the district administration to ensure prompt and adequate medical treatment for all passengers injured in the accident. The injured have been admitted to nearby hospitals, and those seriously injured have been referred to higher medical centres for better treatment, his office said.
The deceased have been identified as Govind Ballabh (80), Parvati Devi (75), Nandan Singh (65), Tara Devi (50), Ganesh (25), Umesh (25), and Govindi Devi (58).
