NEW DELHI, JANUARY 30: T S Krishna Murthy today assumed charge as the new election commissioner to fill the vacancy caused by the retirement of G V G Krishnamurty in September last year.

Prior to his new appointment, Murthy, a 1963 batch Indian Revenue Service officer, was company affairs secretary. Taruvai Subbayya Krishna Murthy, who will turn 60 in May this year, will have a tenure of more than five years in the constitutional office in the multi-member commission. Under the Constitution, election commissioners hold office for six years or upto the age of 65 years, whichever is earlier.

The Presidential order appointing Murthy as the third member of the commission was issued on January 12. 8220;I am very happy to assume a very important constitutional office and will try my best for a fair and transparent electoral system in the country8221;, Murthy told reporters soon after taking charge.

Murthy brings to the commission a rich and varied experience of having served in various capacities including chiefcommissioner of income tax at Mumbai and Chennai, director general of income tax, additional secretary, expenditure department at the Centre and an international assignment as resident tax adviser at Ethiopia. He was elevated to the post of secretary in the department of company affairs in the ministry of law, justice and company affairs in January 1997.
