BERLIN: Croatia captain Niko Kovac had already started to think beyond Brazil immediately after their 1-0 World Cup defeat by the champions on Tuesday. “We have to win both the other games,” he said. “We knew that before but now it’s reality. We all need to concentrate on that.” Kovac was substituted late in the first half after a heavy challenge from Brazil’s Ze Roberto. The skipper said he had hurt his ribs and would know more about the extent of the injury on Wednesday. But Kovac felt he would be able to play in the team’s next game against Japan in Nuremberg on June 18.
Dhorasoo causes some hairy moments
STUTTGART: Indian viewers had some reason to cheer when Vikash Dhorasoo, the only Indian at the World Cup, was brought onto the field in the 84th minute during France’s match against Swittzerland. It didn’t take long for the Mauritius-born Dhorasoo to infuse some zest into the otherwise lacklustre proceedings. First, he created a chance for Theirry Henry with a superb long through ball and then almost scored in the 90th minute, driving a low volley just wide off the Swiss far upright.
Parreira backs Ronaldo
BERLIN: Brazil coach Carlos Alberto Parreira stood by Ronaldo after the striker’s lacklustre performance against Croatia on Tuesday, promising he would keep his place for the next match. Brazil face Australia in Munich on Sunday and Ronaldo will again be a fixture up front. “Ronaldo will start, he is in the team,” said Parreira. “He needs to get rhythm, he is a player who can decide a match.”
