With garnering support for the Indo-Us nuclear deal expected to top the agenda of External Affairs Mister Pranab Mukherjee’s visit to South Korea, the indications emerging from the country are not so encouraging.

Speaking on Monday, South Korean diplomat Chun Yung-Woo warned that the US civilian nuclear deal with India could set a bad precedent for North Korea, said agency reports from Seoul.

Chun Yung-Woo is Seoul’s chief negotiator to six-party talks on terminating North Korea’s nuclear ambitions. His comments, reported by the local media, were confirmed by the Foreign Ministry, said agency reports.

“I think devising a new international system along the lines of the US-India nuclear deal would take decades, if ever. It would pose a big problem,” Woo said.

In Seoul, Mukherjee will co-chair the fifth Meeting of the India-ROK (Republic of Korea) Joint Commission. “During his stay, he will also exchange views with the Korean leadership on several issues of mutual interest,” said an External Affairs Ministry spokesperson.

This will be the first visit by the Indian Foreign Minister to South Korea in the last three years, though there have been a number of other visits including at the Summit level in 2004, and in 2006

Besides the Joint Commission meeting, the External Affairs Minister will also call on the South Korean President and other leaders. Mukherjee leaves on September 13 for his visit to both South Korea and Thailand.
