CHANDIGARH, Aug 6: Doctor G S Kochhar and Alamgir Grewal qualified for semi-final of the Independence DayCup Golf Tournament at the Chandigarh Golf Course here today. They defeated the pair of SPS Matharoo and Cdr JV Singh in a tough competition. They were halved till the 12th hole. On the 13th par-five hole, Kochhar, who is also the chairman, Media and Publicity Committee Chandigarh Golf Club, had chip in eagle to win that hole. Kochhar had the distinction of recording the first eagle of the tournament.

The Kochhar-Grewal duo then halved the 14th par-three hole and won the 15th par-four hole by par and won the match on the 17th hole by two holes up. Gurbaaz Mann and Nitin Mittal joined them in the semi-final by defeating Tarun Lehal and B S Sandhawalia. Despite elbow injury Captain Sandhawalia put up a plucky fight against Mann till the 16th hole.

They were halved till the 16th hole and on the 17th par-four, Gurbaaz Mann had a birdie to win that hole and wrapped up the match on the 18th hole by two holes up.

In the third quarter-final, Col B S Shergill and Group Captain AS Dhadli defeated Sanjit Singh Bala and Kabir Singh. Col Shergill8217;s team were four holes up after nine holes and won the match on the 16th hole by two three holes up.

In the lasts quarter-final match, J S Bhaika and Karanbir Pannu beat J S Bakshi and Col M S Padda. It was another difficult match for J S Bhaika and Karanbir Pannu. They were halved till the 17th hole and won the last 18th hole and the match by having a par.

ITF coaching course
The Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association will hold ITF Level I Course at the CLTA Complex in Sector 10 from September 18 to 23, according to association secretary Jai Singh Gill. The course will be conducted by two experienced national coaches and those who clear the course will be be awarded an All India Tennis Association Coaching Proficiency Certificates.

These courses are also being held in Chennai, Indore, Bangalore and Mumbai.Details are available with CLTA general manager Kailash Nath. Last date of receipt of application is September 12.
