
Ireland8217;s Ken Doherty kisses the trophy after beating Stephen Hendry to become the new snooker world champion.

Ken Doherty won his Snooker World Championship here, ending the five-year reign of Stephen Hendry at the Crucible Theatre following a fascinating final last night.
Doherty became the first player from the Republic of Ireland to win the title following his 18-12 victory, which ended world No 1 Hendry8217;s 29-match winning streak and stopped his bid to win six straight world crown. The 27-year-old Doherty additionally became the first world amateur champion to go on and take the professional crown, succeeding where six-times runner-up Jimmy White just failed.
Scottish wizard Hendry never quite found his form during the final and thus has to wait another year before he can launch another bid to become the first modern-day player to win a seventh World title overall.
World number seven Doherty, who had taken an 11-5 lead on a dramatic opening day of the final, won two of yesterday8217;s first four frames to maintain his six-frame advantage at 13-7.
The Irishman then knocked in a break of 70 in the second frame to quell a Hendry fightback before the mid-session interval. Hendry showed he would fight tooth and nail to maintain his dreams of yet another crown in taking the day8217;s opener with a decisive run of 58.
Doherty received the game8217;s most coveted trophy and the 210,000 pounds8217;prize for his efforts.
