Finally, some good news for Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Chaibasa, Latehar, Ramgarh, Saraikela and Lohardaga 8212; long in the news for Naxalite violence or scams 8212; which are now the focus of new investment. According to the industry department8217;s latest report, the state government has cleared proposals worth Rs 33,629.66 crore from 27 companies for mining iron-ore and setting up factories in these areas.
Having a jail of a time
Until a couple of months back, Hotwar, on the outskirts of Ranchi, was just another village. Today, thanks to an upcoming mega-jail, it is on the map. The jail, spread over five acres of land, is estimated to cost Rs 36 crore. It is expected to house 3,000 male and 500 female prisoners in its 15 spacious wards, each with its own toilets and kitchen. There is even a VIP ward fitted with a TV, fan and geyser.
Governing ideas
No need to read between the lines. It was all there in black and white in this book, Superhit Jokes, selected by the East Singhbhum district committee for the libraries run by the World Bank-aided Jharkhand Education Project. The book has been published by the New Delhi-based Pustak Mahal. Sample the fare on the two then governors, Sarojini Naidu and C Rajagopalachari: 8216;8216;Once when Naidu went to meet him, Rajaji took her to his bedroom in the Raj Bhawan in West Bengal. Showing her his beautiful bed, he said, 8216;8216;What is the use of this cot for a widower and old man like me?8217; Naidu replied: 8216;I have helped you many times earlier but this time I can8217;t do anything8217;.8217;8217;
Not surprisingly, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthti Parishad protested, demanding the book be withdrawn. The State HRD minister complied, directing the authorities to withdraw it. 8216;8216;In future no books other than those published by NCERT and National Book Trust will be bought for these libraries,8217;8217; said A K Singh, HRD Secretary.
