BIEL, July 31: Joel Lautier of France trounced World Champion Anatoly Karpov in the biggest upset of the Credit Suisse International Grandmasters chess tournament being played at Congress Centre here.
India8217;s Vishwanathan Anand, playing a cool draw with Boris Gelfand of Belarus, snatched the lead at the end of eighth round of the championship.
The 45-year-old veteran Anatoly Karpov contradicted his own maxim about playing safe and indulged in a reckless game today to get the punishment he deserved from young Frenchman Joel Lautier.Lautier had correctly judged aging Karpov8217;s discomfort against the King Pawn opening.
The world champion played his pet Caro Kann Defence and soon got into difficulties .Karpov8217;s King was stuck in the centre. Lautier cleverly forced the world champion to weaken his King side. Karpov, uncharacteristicallly lost his patience at this stage and grabbed Lautier8217;s pawns on the Queen8217;s wing.
This opened a pandora8217;s box and Lautier came up with a stunning sacrifice on 26th move. To avoid loss of his Queen Karpov had to lose an exchange.
Lautier handled the final part with precision and Karpov resigned the game on 43rd move.Anand had learnt his lesson well after a shock defeat from Vadim Milov in the previous round. He employed his usual Queen8217;s Gambit accepted with the RESULTS: 8th round: Joel Lautier 3.5 bt A Karpov 5, B Gelfend 3.5 drew with Viswanathan Anand 5.5, V Milov 3.5 lost to Y Pelletier 2.
