NEW DELHI, January 12: Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand said tonight though Russia8217;s Anatoly Karpov retained the Fide world chess championship title he believed he had won the tournament.
8220;I think I still believe I won the tournament. I cannot believe that a man who just has to play six games can be credited with winning anything. So I just feel okay. It8217;s just a world championship,8221; the Indian challenger, who lost an exciting tie-breaker in the final at Lausanne on Friday, said.In a telephonic conversion to Star News from Laussane today Anand said, 8220;I missed out in the end but he Karpov did not win anything really.8221;
Ridiculing the world championship format of Fide, the world chess governing body, Anand said, 8220;somehow I just feel the rules of the championship were ridiculous.8221;
8220;I basically had to run a marathon of 42 km and than was asked to run 100m dash against a guy who did not run at all,8221; he said, attributing his loss to a tiring seven knockout rounds, spread over three weeks, in Groningen.8220;I mean I cannot think of any other explanation. Here I was fighting against a man who had to play just six games. I made so many mistakes that I did not make in three weeks in Groningen.8221;
Anand, however, expressed happiness over his performance.
8220;I am very very happy of my performance, in Groningen especially. I felt and a lot of people felt that I played the best chess of my career and i mean it was the strongest knockout tournament in history since 1851 and that was really special. This time I really prepared and was motivated and that showed.8221;
