NEW DELHI, SEPT 22: Ensuring quality rather than quantity, fitness of players and seeking more than 100 per cent commitment from the players will be the top priority of new cricket coach, Kapil Dev.
In his first meeting with the media today hours after accepting his new assignment, the world8217;s highest wicket-taker in Tests said he would prefer a longer term than the two years he has been handed charge.
8220;Two years is too short a period to do anything. I feel sorry for some of my predecessors who got only one year. It takes longer time to build a team. I am keen to do the job on a longer period. I am not happy at all with this two-year term,8221; he clarified. He added that he would sit with the Board officials and discuss the details.
He, however, denied that he set any conditions before the Board for his appointment. 8220;National service is what is important. If you are sincere in your efforts, things will fall in their places,8221; he said with a smile.
8220;My job is to win matches for the country and I willact as a big brother to the players. It is not important whether I sit in the selection committee meeting or not and whether all my suggestions are taken or not. These things will become clear once I talk to the Board,8221; he said.
While admitting that good players need not be good coaches, Kapil also set at rest the charge that he had no previous experience as a coach. 8220;I had no Test match experience when I made my debut at the age of 18,8221; he retorted.
The former India skipper declared that his priority was to lift the fitness level and encourage the Board, selectors and team management to think as one, to ensure the 8220;team gives more than 100 per cent8221; and returns to its winning ways.
8220;In the last 3-4 months, the team has been playing lot of cricket. I would stress upon the BCCI the importance of playing quality games rather than giving importance to quantity. Number of matches is not important. The quality of games we play is.8221;
Kapil, who was known for his supreme fitness in his playing days, nodoubt wants the same from the players. 8220;There have been cases of injuries to players in the last couple of months. That aspect avoiding injuries and keeping oneself fit has to be taken carefully.
He refused to outline his immediate plans saying, 8220;If it was that easy, everyone would have done well. I would like to plan with junior and A8217; teams. In fact, A8217; teams should play more matches and the senior team should concentrate on quality games.8221;
To a question what he had to say about Sachin Tendulkar8217;s back problem, the new coach said, 8220;It is the Board8217;s duty to look after him. My job is to look after the entire team. I8217;ll try my best to encourage every individual.
8220;I had decided to give up the game entirely once I quit first-class cricket in 1994. I have been playing golf since. Now I will once again pack off my golf equipment and come out with whites/ colour clothing along with my team members. I have already started distributing my business responsibilities to others so that it does not comeinto this role as a national coach. I cannot go into a playing ground with the pressure of responsibility of business,8221; he said.
Kapil also had a word of caution for the media. 8220;Please don8217;t expect any stories from me. If you want news, come to me collectively. I am willing to talk to a group of people. But no individual interviews, please,8221; he said.
