The tradition of some of the taziyas goes back to the 16th century when the Mughals and Bijapur were vying with each other for a sway over this strategic town.Youth were seen self-flagellating themselves with chains to which knives were attached at the taziya near the fire station at Chhaya Talkies. The police however were taking no chances and strict bandobust was maintained throughout Kalyan. There were no reports of any untoward incidents.A jungle of signboardsThe area around Birla College has undergone so much of change that someone who has been away from Kalyan for a year will have difficulty in recognising the area. While the old residents still moan about the "cruel beheading'' of the jamun trees that lined the street from Sindhi Gate to the Roshan petrol pump, the ruthless chopping down of the verdant greenery which lined both the sides of the road leading to the college has further agonised them. The ingenious civic authorities have found a nice way to replace the trees: sign boards. Huge, ugly boards vie for attention in their race skywards. While some tell you of coaching classes, the others scream about quick ways to getting computer savvy. The college students are the worst sufferers of this as there is no shade to stand under as the sun does its act while they wait for the `forever-late' bus. That it is exam season isn't helping much either.
