8226; As I read this series of articles by Arun Shourie IE, Ensuring it remains Indian territory, I couldn8217;t but help feel enthused by the minister8217;s views, efforts and initiatives. However, a few things come to mind by way of feedback: The more focused we are in our customer-centric approach, the better-off we would be, as a country. This would automatically guide and lead us to creating more value to the customer as well as the country in addition to the companies we all represent. The value creation has to happen along multiple dimensions, all converging into helping the customer derive business benefits and enhance their topline and not just be bottomline. A very strong leadership focus is essential to propagate this spirit of value-creation as a vision of every Indian company. Most importantly, the government too has to beef-up its IT spend on further improving our own internal systems which is what China is doing8212;its IT spend is phenomenal. This would not only improve our own internal situation, but also enable a lock-in of wealth within the country8212;which can then be used to create more wealth that can be re-distributed among a wider group.

President8217;s rule
8226; It is most disturbing that by giving just two examples of murders outside Bihar, Dilip D8217;Souza is trying to show that Bihar is as normal as other states and absolving Bihar government of its failure to maintain law and order IE, December 31. He has better note that not only Satyendra Dubey, but also many others, get regularly murdered in Bihar. Unfortunately many persons tried to use the murder of Dubey to serve their political goals of maligning the honourable prime minister. This is not only against the nation8217;s interests, but is also against the cause for which Dubey laid down his life. The PMO did not leak his identity and the leak was not necessary. That Dubey was against corruption could not have been a secret. The PM must initiate a special debate in Parliament on the law and order situation in Bihar and then get its sanction for imposition of President8217;s rule.

Saving AMU
8226; Hats off to the entire opposition led by Sonia Gandhi for raising the issue in Parliament of saving the minority character of the AMU given to it by the 1981 AMU Amendment Act sanctioned by Parliament. The way the opposition so unitedly came out for upholding the cause of the AMU to oppose the UGC attack under the pretext of the Common Admission Test is indeed praiseworthy. In fact it is not the UGC but the BJP government that is trying to end with the minority character of AMU. The BJP has taken as a windfall the Supreme Court judgment on CAT, ignoring conveniently the judgment8217;s operative portion that minority institutions can be exempted from this.

Jai jawan
8226; Apropos of the editorial, 8216;Let8217;s not forget8217; IE, December 31, we must not forget that the credit for keeping the country united should primarily go to the armed forces. Yet there is an appalling insensitivity to jawans, even in death. No compensation is really adequate for the profession of soldiering but at least they can be provided a place of pride in society. Among the suggestions I have to offer are: improve the pay package substantially. There must be assured promotions after every five years 8212; if not earlier 8212; for a jawan. An officer should be able to rise to the rank of substantive colonel and brigadier in 15 and 20 years respectively. The equivalents between service and civilian cadres must be rationalised and the protocol, so systematically eroded over the years, be restored.
