
BHOPAL, OCT 28: Athletes of Railways dominated the opening day of the 39th Open National Athletic Championship being held at the Tatya Tope Nagar stadium.
Out of 14 competitions, the Railway team bagged gold in at least eight events.
Railways Sunita Rani and Shivnandan opened the account for their team by securing golds in 1500-metre race in both the categories.
Sunita Rani bettered her last year8217;s performance by clocking 4:16.24 seconds while Shivnandan cornered gold in 3:54.69 seconds.
P T Usha won gold in 200 metres race while Shakti Singh demonstrated an impressive performance in shotput, winning gold for the Railway team. Neelam J Singh Railway secured gold in discuss throw while Jobeshwari Devi, also of the Railways, set a new record of the National Open meet in hammer throw.
Jobeshwari Devi set a new national record in hammer throw 52.20m, breaking the record of Surinderjit Kaur 51.50. She also improved on her last year8217;s performance of throwing hammer up to 49.14 metres.
SurinderjitKaur has to content with silver this time as she threw the hammer upto 51.10 metres while Hardeep Kaur of Life Insurance Corporation LIC won the bronze with 51.00 metres.
