A day after Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad made clear that firm steps would be taken to deal with militancy, senior Congress leader Jan Mohammad Kakroo was gunned down by militants outside a shrine in Baramulla town this morning.
Azad, who rushed to Baramulla soon after the killing, again questioned coalition partner PDP8217;s demand for troop reduction 8212; after the PDP threatened to walk away, the Centre this week announced a panel to look into troop deployment in J038;K.
8220;For a long time, we have been saying that this is not the time for troop reduction. In the last three days, militants have shown what they want. First they killed five labourers in Rajouri, next day they set off a bomb which left 13 injured in Kishtwar and now this killing,8221; Azad said.
Baramulla SSP Viplaw Kumar said Kakroo was shot after prayers at a shrine in Khwaja Sahib Mohalla. 8220;As Kakroo stepped out around 7.30 am, a militant opened fire. He and his PSO were taken to hospital but Kakroo died on the way8221; Kumar said.
The militant managed to escape though there8217;s massive Army presence in the town. A militant outfit calling itself the Shuhada Brigade Martyrs Brigade claimed responsibility for the killing. Abu Katba, spokesman of the outfit, said that Kakroo was killed for being a Congress functionary. The PDP also condemned the killing with Mufti Mohammad Sayeed saying 8220;Kakroo8217;s murder is an inhuman act.8221;
