Jawaharlal redux

8226; I read Sagarika Ghose8217;s article, 8216;Wanted: Jawaharlal 20058217; ...

.

8226; I read Sagarika Ghose8217;s article, 8216;Wanted: Jawaharlal 20058217; IE, Dec 8 and agreed with it until I came upon this: 8220;If Natwar wants to keep Nehru8217;s moral foreign policy alive why does he not speak out more relevantly against the military junta in Myanmar8230;?8221; While praising Nehru, let us remember that the Myanmar regime has provided invaluable support in tackling the Northeast problem. Let us praise Nehru, but let us also keep in mind the ground reality which does not advocate a Nehruvian foreign policy but hard-headed realism.

8226; It is true that apart from Central ministers, the rest of the country has become institutionalised and hence a target to vilification. Few can claim to the ideals, honesty and charm of that great leader. We need true admirers of Nehru8217;s ideals 8212; not stale imitations.

8212; Rajiv Chandran Tokyo

8226; The goof-up which Nehru committed regarding China was more than enough for us. Please, we do not need any more Nehrus.

8226; Apropos of Sagarika Ghose8217;s brilliant piece, if we are living in a democratic country today then his contribution has been the greatest.

Death of a star

8226; The death of Cristiano de Lima Junior of Dempo Club is sad IE, Dec 6. He was playing very nicely and fought bravely to win the match and the Federation Cup for his team. It is tragic that there were no proper medical facilities available to him. The organisers should be blamed for his death.

8212; Md Mudassir Alam Aligarh

8226; The death of the Brazilian star has shocked all football lovers. Junior was one of India8217;s best foreign recruits. Junior8217;s death raises a few questions: Did Mohun Bagan keeper Subroto Paul really charge at Junior and did this cause his death? Why were there no arrangements for an artificial respiratory system 8212; even oxygen was not available? Why was he not taken to the nearby Mallya hospital? Hope all this comes as an eye-opener for AIFF.

8212; Bidyut K. Chatterjee Faridabad

8226; It8217;s unfortunate that Bhaichung Bhutia has made such an irresponsible comment on Subrato Paul. First I do not agree with him that the foul committed by the Mohun Bagan custodian demands punishment. Also how can he conclude that the foul was the reason for Junior8217;s death? Is he a doctor? At least he could have waited for the outcome of the post-mortem report.

Sad signal

8226; The answers to our failure to develop at a fast rate is in the edition of the Express of December 7. The highly successful bureaucrat, Jayakar Jerome, credited with having achieved a miracle in terms of Bangalore8217;s development, is now spending time in some obscure department because he prevented influential people from grabbing land. Another civil servant who lost her post for insisting on fiscal discipline is Maharashtra8217;s principal secretary, Finance, Chitkal Zutshi. What signals do these two incidents send out to honest, upright
bureaucrats?
