Israelis shoot down PSG

Alon Mizrahi scored Haifa’s last-gasp goal to give the Israelis a dramatic 3-2 win on the night for a 4-3 aggregate victory over the 1996 winners from France.

Holders Chelsea and Italy’s Lazio survived awkward away fixtures to creep into second round, but England’s Newcastle United and Germany’s MSV Duisburg were both knocked out.

PSG, who drew the first leg against Haifa 1-1 in Paris, fell behind in Isreal to a goal from Haifa’s Adoram Casey after 58 minutes.

Nicolas Ouedec levelled for PSG only for Mizrahi to score his first of the night after 77 minutes to swing the tie back in Haifa’s favour.

Four minutes from time Augustin Okocha looked to have put PSG through on away goals but Mizrahi scored his second in the dying moments to give the Israelis a famouswin.

Last year’s semifinalists Lokomotive Moscow of Russia remain on track after defeating Ukrainian rivals Cska Kiev in the Russian capital. Beanpole teenager Dmitry Bulykin scored twice as the Muscovites won 3-1 to go through 5-1 overall.

Cypriot side Apollon Limassol beat Jablonec of the Czech Republic on penalties after their encounter finished 3-3on aggregate after extra-time.Hungary’s interest in this season’s European competitions ended when Austria’s Ried won 1-0 at MTK Budapest for an easy 3-0 aggregate victory.Turkey’s Besiktas also progressed despite losing 2-1 in Slovakia to Spartak Trnava. Besiktas won the first leg 3-0.

In the Uefa Cup first round, Scotland’s Rangers beat Beitar Jersulam of Israel 4-2 at Ibrox for a 5-3 aggregate win.
