Despite tall claims by the government and Indian Olympic Association IOA of having ridden Indian sports of drug menace, a number of top athletes tested positive for banned drugs during the National Games in Hyderabad last year.

Though officials are not disclosing any details, over a dozen athletes from at least three disciplines were believed to have tested postive during the December 13 to 22 Games which the organisers trumpeted as being 8216;8216;dope free.8217;8217;

Admitting the embarassing news, IOA secretary-general Randhir Singh, who is also a member of the World Anti-Doping Agency, said 8216;8216;the IOA had received a list from its Medical Commission containing the names of athletes who returned a positive result in the Games.8217;8217;

Amateur Athletic Federation of india AAFI secretary Dr Lalit Bhanot said those athletes whose 8216;A8217; sample tested positive in Hyderabad were grilled by the Medical Commission. 8216;8216;Once we got communication from IOA the athletes concerned were informed and were called before a Medical Commission.8217;8217;

Stating that AAFI got the report from IOA almost a month back, he said 8216;8216;the procedures that follow after 8216;A8217; samples turn positive are now almost over. And we are in the process of compiling the final report.8217;8217;

He, however, declined to dislcose the number of athletes who tested positive at the Games. Talking to PTI from Patiala, Dr Manmohan Singh, head of the IOA Medical Commission said 8216;8216;any action against the athletes is possible after competing all the procedures including the testing of 8216;B8217; samples if any athelete asks for it. I can8217;t give you any details. 8220;
