MADURAI, Aug 5: Madurai Divisional Railway Manager R Sivadhasan, said on Monday that investigation is on to detect the exact cause of the explosion that occurred in the Madurai-Bangalore Express this morning near Bangarpet.

Talking to The Indian Express, he further said that most of the injured were commuters, and only one passenger from Erode and one from Kuppam were among the injured.

He asserted that the explosion had nothing to do with the TTs strike at Madurai railway junction last Saturday. The TTs had called off their strike on Sunday afternoon itself and all of them had reported for duty the same evening.

He said an inquiry was being conducted into the TTs strike by the Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, and on the basis of the report appropriate action would be initiated against them if necessary. He, however, added that such confusions over territorial limits of TTs always arose when a new train was introduced.

Though the TTs failed to report for duty on the evening of August 2, all the trains which left Madurai had been deputed with special staff from the Commercial Department to check the tickets. Approximately, Rs 25,000 was collected as penalty from ticketless passengers, he pointed.

He said the territorial limits of TTs on train was chalked out jointly by top railway officials and the union leaders. The DRM was not empowered to make alterations, he added.

To a specific question on the catering service in the Vaigai and Koodal express trains, he said that he was aware of the poor quality of food being served to passengers. He assured that the problem will be looked into at the earliest.
