CAPE TOWN, Jan 5: South Africa clinched the five-Test series against England with an innings and 37 runs victory on the fourth day of the fourth Test at Newlands here Wednesday.

England were bowled out for 126 by tea in their second innings to give South Africa a decisive 2-0 lead in the five-match series. Left-arm spinner Paul Adams was South Africa’s most successful bowler, taking three for 42 as England failed to build any substantial partnerships on a good batting pitch.

England were reduced to 10 batsmen with allrounder Andrew Flintoff unable to bat after breaking a bone in his left foot while bowling on Monday. Allrounder Lance Klusener struck two crucial blows after Shaun Pollock had started the slide with his third ball of the day when he had Mark Butcher caught behind without adding to the overnight total of four.

Klusener, who had not taken a wicket in the series before claiming two for 42 in the first innings, dismissed England captain Nasser Hussain for 16 with his third delivery in thesecond innings and followed up by having Michael Vaughan caught behind for five. Hussain was trapped on his crease by a fast yorker. He was given out lbw by Sri Lankan umpire BC Cooray but looked ruefully at his bat as he walked back to the pavilion, with television replays appearing to confirm the ball had hit the edge of the bat.

Cooray was involved in more controversy shortly before lunch when he turned down an appeal against Mike Atherton for a pad-bat catch at silly point by Gary Kirsten off left arm spinner Paul Adams. Replays again seemed to indicate Cooray had made the wrong decision.
