A group of militants allegedly crossed over into India early on Tuesday after cutting the barbed wire along the international border in Kanachak sector of Jammu.

In New Delhi, Defence Minister A K Antony said though the increasing number of cross-border firings were a cause for concern, the ceasefire agreement with Pakistan should remain in place. 8220;This year, the cross-border firing incidents are more. But that does not mean the entire border is troublesome. Even now I feel we have to hold on to the ceasefire agreement,8221; Antony said, adding that very few militants have managed to sneak in due to the Army8217;s efforts.

Kanachak was the second major infiltration since May, when a group of militants managed to sneak into Indian territory under cover of heavy fire from the Pakistani side in Samba sector and gunned down five people.

Sources said the militants used the same modus operandi this time too. A group of over 20 militants took positions close to the border around 12.45 am and opened fire on BSF pickets. The BSF personnel retaliated and the exchange of fire between the two sides continued for nearly an hour. However, taking advantage of the exchange of fire, some militants cut the barbed wire fence near the Laliyal border outpost and sneaked into Indian territory.

BSF8217;s Deputy Inspector General G S Virk confirmed that three to four militants were seen moving towards India. 8220;We fired at them, but they managed to escape,8221; he said. He added that the BSF seized nearly nine magazines of AK rifles, two grenades and two gloves where the fence had been cut.
