A fight over a female of the species led to the death of an eight-year-old leopard on the outskirts on Nawagam village in Ramanath forest, adjacent to the Girnar Sanctuary, on Friday.

Range Forest Officer Girnar-south range M N Parmar said they have recovered the carcass of the big cat on the outskirts of the village and sent it to the Sakkar Baug Zoo for a post-mortem.

Parmar said the post-mortem report confirmed that the

animal died due to injuries sustained in the battle. 8220;Infighting between two males led to the death of one of the animals. Such phenomenon is common among animals,8221; he said.

C N Bhoova, veterinary doctor, Sakkar Baug Zoo, Junagadh said, 8220;Traumatic injury as a result of infighting between the two has been stated to be the reason behind the animal8217;s death.8221; Parmar said that according to some shepherds who had witnessed the fierce fight, it lasted for two days. He said the shepherds had also seen a female leopard near the sight of the battle.
