With reference to your front page story 8216;Iran8217;s A.Q. Khan link up on Vienna Radar8217; and 8216;US must get Pakistan to dismantle terror network8217; IE, November 19, two questions: how many more innocent Indians must die before we show the determination to take firm action? And, is the US serious about nuclear non-proliferation? After all, it looked the other way when Dr Khan was doing his nefarious job of spreading proliferation with religious zeal. America8217;s condemnation of Pakistan-based militants8217; acts of terror on our soil are pro forma. That country will act only when it is itself hurt, not otherwise. Must we respect its susceptibilities just because it is a superpower and professes to be our friend while literally underwriting Pakistan8217;s misdeeds as it is its ally?

No vision thing
8226; C. Raja Mohan8217;s Op-ed on India lagging behind China in nuclear power, raises questions that need answering 8216;Chinese takeaway8217;, IE, November 18. Why does India depend on other governments to accelerate nuclear power generation? It cannot be the lack of raw materials such as uranium and thorium which are available in many countries and can be obtained for payment. It cannot be lack of mechanical and electrical processing of raw materials to enrich them because that is just standard engineering which can be ratcheted up by existing Indian know-how. It cannot be reactor specific science and engineering which, while classified in other nuclear regimes, is probably known to Indian nuclear personnel. There is also no holdback arising out of treaties because India is not bound to any that will chain her. I think there is a total lack of political will, vision and aspiration in India to accelerate the nuclear industry.

What RSS meant
8226; This is apropos of your editorial 8216;Till cows come home8217; IE, November 19. RSS chief K.S. Sudarshan8217;s formula to enhance Hindu population to compete with the rate of growth of Muslim population looks odd. He would have said this more in anguish than in all seriousness that the majority Hindus will turn into a minority if all communities do not follow uniform civil laws. No one would like India to become a theocratic state like Pakistan where the liberties enjoyed by majority Muslims are denied to the minorities. But for this, the rational solution is through persuasion, and not by inducing competition between religions for the production of more children.

Change the channel
8226; The issue is not whether Sania Mirza must support or oppose Khushboo8217;s views. The issue is, why shouldn8217;t Sania be allowed to voice her opinion, without bringing on this hailstorm of moral indignation and worse? What did Khushboo say, really? Why these double standards? Do these moralists believe that all people are celibate till they marry? Don8217;t like what you hear? Well, turn off the telly or switch to Aastha channel.

Laloo, hero
8226; Your paper should be ashamed of writing about the lack of development in Bihar. For 15 years, your tribe, the English language print media, have been lionising Laloo Yadav as a hero. Why do you now complain? Secular India deserves rulers like Laloo!
