India take the lead

It was a great start for defending champions India as they embarked on their Ravi Kirloskar Trophy India-Pakistan Golf meet in Islamabad today.

It was a great start for defending champions India as they embarked on their Ravi Kirloskar Trophy India-Pakistan Golf meet in Islamabad today.

On the opening day, they teed-off to a 4-2 lead, even with no more than nine holes of practice under their belts.

The first was the 8216;four-ball better ball8217; format in which the Indian challenge went out from Simarjeet Singh and Joseph Chakola, and Anirban Lahiri and Jasjeet Singh. Those were the pairs, winning their respective matches to put India 2-0 up in the elite category.

Even the seniors came good. Asian Games gold medallist Amit Luthra and Vinay Goel over-40 category, made it 3-0, even though Rajendra Dutta and Yogesh Chopra lost. Yet India were ahead 3-1.

Also losing were Vijay Kumar and Vikramjit Singh, among the over 50s, going down to Pakistan8217;s famous professional Taimur Hassan and partner.

Lead down to 3-2, the other over 50s category team 8212; of Sanjeev Talwar and IPS Mann 8212; won with the light fading to make it 4-2 for India.

The three-day tournament is being played in the Ryder Cup format.
