WASHINGTON, April 14: India has received an insignificant amount of foreign direct investment FDI compared to China in 1995, according to a study.
China received FDI of 36.279 billion in 1995 against 1.316 billion by India, the study of FDI by the International Finance Corporation IFC and the foreign investment service, a joint IFC-world bank service, said.
The figures for earlier years were similar. In 1994, for instance, China got 37.056 billion of FDI and India received 680 million. In 1991, the year of India8217;s economic reforms, FDI received by India totalled 153 million and China 4.733 billion; in 1992, India 165 million and China 12.159 billion; in 1993, India 305 million and China 30.746 billion.
This, says the study, reflects India8217;s relatively slow progress in restructuring growth and orienting its policies to encourage FDI.
quot;The big story of the past 15 years has been the rise in FDI in China. Between 1990 and 1996, China received some 167 billion in 1996 prices.quot;
Topdeveloping country recipients of FDI in 1996 in value were in the following order: China, Mexico, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brazil, Poland, Colombia, Czech Republic, Thailand, Peru and India.
