MILTON KEYNES, MARCH 28: India slumped to their third successive defeat, going down 0-4 to formidable Germany in the women8217;s Olympic Hockey Qualifying Tournament to be knocked out of the reckoning for a place in the Sydney games. Great Britain took lead in the group B by beating Japan by 2-1.
Spearheaded by skipper Katrin Kauschke, who scored a brace 56th and 66th, the Germans totally outclassed the Indians, after the Indians managed to hold them goalless in the first session.
The Indian eves came up with a spirited display in the first session and defended resolutely, getting most of their players behind the ball. Though Germany, who forced four penalty corners, had territorial advantage, the Indians did well to thwart them.
The Indians were rarely troubled but were also unable to test German goalkeeper Birgit Beyer in the first 35 minutes.
But things changed in the second half and Germany went ahead four minutes into the session when Becker converted their fifth penalty corner.
Becker flicked the ball over goalkeeper Tingonieima Chanu to put the Europeans ahead. India could have equalised in the 45th minute but Ekka blasted her shot wide off the mark from just few yards.
Two minutes later, the Germans increased the lead when Ernsting-Kirienke beat Chanu to score a fine field goal.
India got a chance to reduce the margin but Mamta Kharab was denied by Beyer, who stretched herself fully to stop the the onrushing Indian forward.
Germany8217;s third goal came off a good counter-attack. Kauschke was left unmarked in the circle as the Indians pressed hard for a goal and the German skipper slammed home a fierce shot, giving her Indian counterpart no chance.
Five minutes later Kauschke completed the tally when she struck off Germany8217;s sixth penalty corner off another indirect attempt.
India take on USA in their final league match on Wednesday.
