Aparna ranked 28th in world
BANGALORE: Aparna Popat, who recently won the French Open ladies badminton title, has moved up from 40th to 28th position in international singles ranking, according to a fax message from the International Badminton Federation received by the Karnataka State Badminton Association here.
The city-based national champion, trained at the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy, became the first Indian woman to win an international title when she beat top-seeded German Katja Michalowsky in the French Open finalon March 22.
Vinod Sridhar packs off Marcus Hilpert
CHENNAI: Only Gaurav Natekar among the seeded players still survives after Day Three of the Indian Oil Servo invitation tennis tournament. In Saturday’s semi-finals, Vinod Sridhar plays Harsh Mankad in a battle of unseeded players while Natekar meets unseeded Manoj Mahadevan.
Top seed Marcus Hilpert, the National champion lost 3-6, 3-6 to Vinod Sridhar. Third seed Vasudeva Reddy conceded the match to ManojMahadevan after leading 4-1 in the first set. Fourth seed Vishal Uppal lost to Harsh Mankad 6-3 6-1, while Natekar won 6-2 6-3 over CV Anand.
Moras, Paite migrate to Bagan
MUMBAI: Local league champions Air-India’s star defender and international Jeevan Moras and speedy mid-fielder Khentang Paite would be donning the green and maroon colours for Calcutta giants Mohun Bagan this season. Air-India and Maharashtra State football coach Bimal Ghosh, who returned from Bangalore after hunting for new talents, said today that it was a big loss for his team as both Moras and Paite had performed impressively in the just concluded National League.
