Indian women edge Korea to finish third

PERTH: India defeated South Korea in a thrilling clash decided on a penalty shootout to claim third place in the four-nation Telstra Challenge Women8217;s Hockey Tournament here on Sunday.

The teams were locked at 2-2 at the end of normal time, and after an extra 15 minutes failed to produced a goal, India won the shootout 4-3.

Goals by South Korea8217;s Kim Eun-Jin 21st minute and India8217;s Suraj Lata Devi 35th made it 1-1 at halftime. Lee Eun-Young restored South Korea8217;s advantage in the 38th minute, but Indian captain Pritam Rani kept her side8217;s hopes alive with a 60th minute equaliser.

In the shootout, Sandeep Kaur, Suraj Lata Devi, Jyoti Sunita Kullu and Sita Gussain were successful for India, while South Korea8217;s scorers were Cho Bo-Ra Ko, Ka Soon-Ja and Park Hyun-Hee.

Gracy brace in State win

MUMBAI: A brace by Gracy Pereira was the highlight of Maharashtra8217;s 3-1 win over Punjab in the seventh Women8217;s National football championship at Shillong,today, according to a message sent by manager Surendra Karkera.

Arathi was the other goal-getter for Maharashtra. Punjab reduced the margin through Arathi.

Maharashtra meet Karnataka tomorrow.

Jeev flounders at finish

NEW DELHI: Jeev Milkha Singh looked all set to challenge the leaders but disaster struck in the last six holes of the third round of the Novotel Perrier French Open, being played at the Golf du Medoc, Bordeaux, France. He finished a hat-trick of birdies on the 12th and was tied for the fifth place. However, his putting deserted him completely and Jeev dropped five strokes, including a double bogey on the 536-yard par-5 14th, to finish the day at two-over 73. He thus slid down to joint 30th place after 54 holes with an aggregate of 3-under 210.

Indian veterans triumph

KATHMANDU: Indian veterans easily overcame the challenge of scoring 264 runs in 33 overs against the World XI in the final of the Legends Cup played at the Tribhuban University Grounds here on Sunday. AshokMalhotra steered his team to victory with an unbeaten 104 runs off 87 balls.

Mahindras draw replayed tie

KOTTAYAM: Kerala Police and Mahindras played out a 1-1 draw in a first round match in the Mammen Mappillai Trophy all-India Football Tournament here today.

The match between the two teams was a replay of the May 7 tie which was abandoned following unruly behaviour by the spectators. Kerala Police took the lead Poulose while Mahindras equalised with Aqueel Ansari scoring.
