BELGRADE: A friendly match between Yugoslavian side partisan Belgrade and Greek side Aek Athens was abandoned here on Tuesdaty with the score at 1-1 after 56 minutes as the fans invaded the field to protest against the Nato air strikes.

In a game billed as a `solidarity match’, watched by 15,000 fans, the players wore targets on their shirts like those worn by protesters during demonstrations in Yugoslavia during the Kosovo conflict.

China submits bid for 2008 Games

BEIJING: Beijing has formally bid for the 2008 Olympic Games, ending years of debate after China’s failure to secure the 2000 Games, state media said.

The official Xinhua news agency said Beijing mayor Liu Qi and Chinese Olympic Committee president Wu Shaozu presented the bid to International Olympic Commitee (IOC) president Juan Antonio Samaranch in Lausanne.
