Kunte defeats Neelotpal Das

Dhaka: International Master Abhijit Kunte defeated compatriot Neelotpal Das in a third round match for his second straight win in the United Insurance chess tournament here today. Today’s back-to-back win put Kunte, double GM normholder, back into contention after he lost the first match. IM Abdullal Al Rakib (3) of Bangladesh took sole lead after beating A Wojtkejwicz of Poland. English grandmaster Nigel Short and Belarussian GM Yuri Shulman were in joint second position with 2.5 points each.

Swati triumphs

Mumbai: International Woman Master Swati Ghate drew her final round tie to win the all-India open FIDE-rating chess tournament with 9.5 points here today. IM Sharad Tilak and Ravikumar tied with 8.5 points each but the former was declared runner-up on better progressive score. Final position: Swati Ghate (9.5), Sharad Tilak (8.5), Ravikumar (8.5), K Gunasekhara (8), V Kamble (8), G Banerjee (8), Sushant Banerjee (8), Ashish Thatte (7.5), D Ravishankar (7.5),Venkatesh Rao (7.5), Sajan Joshi (7.5).

Assam qualify

New Delhi: Assam thrashed Madhya Pradesh 5-0 to qualify for the quarter-final league of the 21st Sub-junior (U-16) National Football Championship here today. Completing the last eight line-up was Mizoram, who beat Chandigarh 4-0.

Holder Bengal along with UP, Tamil Nadu and AP have been clubbed in Group I for the quarter-final league. Group II includes Bihar, Assam, Delhi and Mizoram.
