JANUARY 30: Show cause notice for JCT’s Seriki

MARGAO: The chairman of the Philips National Football League, Albert Colaco, has issued a show cause notice to JCT Mills’ player Seriki Abdul Latif for assaulting Dempo player Marcelo Antonio after the match between the two teams here on January 27.

The JCT player also allegedly abused Goa Football Association joint secretary Savio Messias and a police officer, who attempted to defuse the tension.

NEW DELHI: Top seed Arjan Singh thrashed Rohit Teotia 9-2, 9-3, 9-2 and Navneet Narain overwhelmed Milan Khurana 9-1, 9-2, 9-1 to move into the semi-finals of the fifth DDA Open squash tournament here.

Anuj Kalia and Ritwik Bhattacharya also entered the semis. Kalia overcame Rajesh Verma 4-9, 9-6, 9-1, 9-1 and Bhattacharya downed Salil Bin 9-1, 9-0, 9-10, 9-3.

In the boys (under-19) section, Amit Pal Kohli will take on Ritwik Bhattacharya in the final tomorrow. Kohli drubbed Tarun Gill 9-0, 9-0, 9-4 and Bhattacharya thrashedPradip Kumar 9-1, 9-2, 9-0 in semis.

Kothari upset

CALCUTTA: I Mirza pulled off a big upset, humbling former world champion Manoj Kothari while strong contender Mohammed Asim defeated S Jagtiani in league matches of the Independence Cup Invitation billiards tournament here today.

Kothari led throughout, but lost out to Mirza in the home stretch 499-534 in Group A, while Asim demolished experienced Jagtiani 746-388 to record his second win on the trot in Group B.

Dalmiya shocked

CALCUTTA: International Cricket Council president Jagmohan Dalmiya today asserted that the ICC would take appropriate measures to avoid recurrence of the abandonment of any match following unfit pitch condition.

Dalmiya here said he was shocked to learn that a One-day international and a Test match had to be abandoned within a span of one month because of poor condition of the wickets. He said, “It is the responsibility of the ICC and the board of each host country in general to ensure the players get thebest possible surfaces on which to compete.”
